I was first introduced to Jodie Mack’s animations at the 7th Orphans Film Symposium, when she and Danielle Ash were recipients of the Helen Hill award. I really liked her work, and was delighted to see the phenakistoscope animation she posted this week. The discs are really beautiful, but be warned: the images flicker pretty rapidly and can get hard to watch. I find the appropriation of the phenakistoscope form (slotted discs) so interesting. From the video’s description, I think the discs were scanned frame by frame, making the slots functionless while viewing the animation (though they can presumably be used as regular phenakistoscope discs, too). Check out some of Jodie Mack’s other wonderful work here!
