Jason Slater reminds us to ask about Adobe Zoetrope

This article by Jason Slater asks a question that I know has been on my mind since Adobe Lab’s bold announcement of its Zoetrope program in 2008. An application that allegedly enables users to look at the internet’s billions of changes through a temporal lens, Zoetrope looked absolutely amazing. Obviously, the first thing that interested me about it was the how and why they felt that the product was most aptly represented and embodied by the name Zoetrope–why that device is the best thing to describe this new tool. The demo video seemed too good to be true, and ultimately, perhaps it is. Even if Adobe Zoetrope is never realized and released for the public, it remains of keen interest, because it represents a particular kind of aspiration. These imagined capabilities of time travel (even just through cyberspace) are great indicators of the goals and anxieties that many of us share.
